The Weave
The Weave is an education building created through the adaptive reuse of an H-plan masonry public school in New York City, USA. The central connector is removed and replaced with a mass timber and low iron glass atrium that forms a shared learning commons. Learning is organized as a cycle of instruction, practice, and discussion or reflection. The commons links these modes with visible circulation, study edges, and gathering steps. Daylight and clear orientation aid daily use. Reuse of the masonry shell and timber construction reduce embodied carbon and construction waste.
The Weave Education Building by Yuchen Qiu was selected as an outstanding representation of architectural design by the A' Design Award & Competition. The Weave Education Building received the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2026. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design competition which celebrates superior design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
