Light Welling House
Light Welling House is a detached single family residence built on a narrow urban site in Tokyo. The site is small and irregular in shape, and natural light could not be drawn from the east or west sides. The stairs were therefore designed as a path of light. The steps are made of perforated metal and the stairwell has glass walls, so daylight reaches each room and is carried from the upper level down to the lower levels. The position of the stairs was set by calculating the altitude of the winter sun. The rooms are finished in white to spread the borrowed light further.
Light Welling House Residence for Single Family by Teruo Miyahara was highlighted as a creative representation of architectural design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Light Welling House Residence for Single Family received the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2020. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design competition that honors exceptional design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
